    Forum Description

Orange peel is caused by having too much volume and too much air in your HVLP spray gun. Normally this condition is caused by either not setting the gun up correctly to begin with or by drifting too close to the project while you are spraying. When the distance is too close, the air pushes the coating around, causing the surface of the coating to ripple. The easiest way to prevent orange peel is to adjust the fan and volume before you start.

    THE FAN

The fan is the top knob on the Iwata or sometimes a small turning knob on the side of the cheaper guns.

    THE VOLUME

The volume knob is the knob that has your needle in front of it. You'll want to start by giving it a full turn and test the amount of Cerakote coming out by bottoming out the trigger on a piece of test paper, then releasing it as soon as you hit all the way open. Look at the blob that is left on the paper. If you can see the paper through the blob, you are still too light. If you can see a scab of coating on top of the blob, you are too heavy. The correct volume should be a wet blob that soaks in and hides the paper.

    THE AIR KNOB

The very bottom knob is your air control. We do not recommend adjusting this knob; it needs to be kept wide open. If you need to adjust your air, do it at the regulator, not the spray gun.

    SPRAYING TIPS

When spraying an inside area, such as inside an AR-15 upper, you'll want the fan knob to be turned all the way to the right so that is completely closed.

For spraying wider areas, instead of closing the fan all the way, you want it set for about 4 inches wide. On the Iwata, that’s around two full turns.
